Security Tight at World Youth Day
as Identicam Helps with 24,000 ID Badges |

Security measures will be tight at World Youth Day, from July 22-28. Identicam Systems Canada will be aiding with the event with equipment to badge 24,000 volunteers with a high security Photo ID Pawel Ratajczak, World Youth Day security coordinator of volunteers, said, “I think it’s the largest security check and ID project of any event in Canada, second only perhaps to the Olympics.”
The high-security, oversized card uses a pre-printed background, microprinting, a hologram, photo, name, identification number and ghosted image of the participant. The hologram is self-adhesive, but will rip or tear if someone tries to take it off a card and apply it to another.
Each volunteer will be checked for any criminal charges and photo identification will be issued to those that provide a satisfactory criminal record check, background check and recommendation from their parish.
Before September 12, 2001 security had not been seen as a major concern. The event has been running every second year since Pope John Paul II initiated it in 1984 and has been hosted by numerous countries across the globe without major security precautions.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors or pilgrims are expected to converge in Toronto from around the world for World Youth Day events that include a papal visit and mass, as well as many spiritual, cultural and entertainment events. The pilgrimage will encourage and promote peace, reconciliation and solidarity. Major events will be held at Exhibition Place and Downsview Park in Toronto. |
