IMPROVING CARD SECURITY

HOW YOU CAN IMPROVE PHOTO ID CARD SECURITY

Some organizations don't require additional security features, but high security areas or season passes may require cards with additional security features.

The following features can be added to your card to improve security.

IdentiGuard - For the Utmost in Card Security!

IdentiGuard is Identicam's new solution for greater protection! IdentiGuard makes it harder than ever to tamper with or duplicate cards. It's available with your logo for only pennies extra for each card, plus an art and plate charge.

Holographic Overlays

Holographic overlays involve producing a hologram on an overlaminate film that can then be applied using a digital printer with overlaminating capabilities. This method is the most secure, offers the best ease-of-use and is the most expensive to produce. Costs for the initial manufacturing can range in price from $3,000 to $25,000 depending on the quality and manufacturing method used.

The card can be easily validated with a quick look and turn of the card to view the reflected light from the hologram. No special light is required, so the card can be validated anywhere there is normal light.

Gradient Screens

A gradient screen screens back the colours that are being printed, gradually fading from dark to light or light to dark.

This can only be done properly by pre-printing your basic card design and then overprinting variable information using a digital printer.

Ultra-Violet Printing

Ultra-violet (UV) printing increases card security and is easy to validate compared to other card security methods. Simply pass an ID card under a UV light and the areas printed with a special UV ink will appear to glow. PVC card printers do not print UV ink, but custom cards can be pre-printed and then used with a digital, Direct-to-Card (DTC) or High Definition Printer (HDP) to overprint employee information and photos. This method is less expensive than a gradient screen since it requires printing only one ink “colour” as opposed to 4 colours.

Micro-printing

Micro-printing is another ID card security method. To the untrained eye or without a magnifying glass, micro-printing looks like a line. When examined under a magnifying glass or microscope, the line actually contains very small type. It’s used in some provinces on driver’s licenses or health cards and usually appears as a light grey line that would normally be overlooked unless it’s examined closely.

This requires pre-printed cards that can then be overprinted with a digital ID card printer. ID card printers do not have the very high resolution required to duplicate micro-printing.

Image Ghosting

Image ghosting involves taking a photographic image, graphic or even a line of type and re-producing a semi-transparent image of it. Usually this image is slightly offset from the original, or it could be somewhere else on the card altogether.

It cannot be easily duplicated on a colour photocopier because a copier degrades the image so much. It does add an extra barrier to duplication and costs very little.

Bar Coding, Magnetic Striping, Proximity Cards & Smart Cards

Bar Coding, magnetic striping, proximity cards and Smart Cards can add to security and provide other capabilities including door access, time and attendance recording and even e-cash or vending capabilities.
